The BBNJ Symposium Series
The BBNJ Symposium Series is a global event series that brings together scientists, industry, civil society, academia, policymakers, and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement.

From its beginnings in Edinburgh to its expansion in Singapore, the series has fostered interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction under the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.

The third symposium, held in Rio de Janeiro in March 2026, built on this momentum at a critical moment for implementation, with a focus on strengthening the science–policy interface and understanding the role of science and knowledge in BBNJ implementation.

Together, the symposia aim to promote inclusive exchange, diverse perspectives, and practical outcomes to advance effective and equitable ocean governance.
